"Hide extensions for unknown files types" and "Hide protected operating system files" are both unchecked. When doing the second you will get a warning flag stating this is being done, Click OK. Choose "File" from the drop down menu of explorer and "close" the explorer.
...Then open your internal search to C: Drive (left button Click\start\search\files and folders). Look for each running program name you previously recorded.
...When they pop up in your internal search list results. Right button click and choose "open containing folder". Make sure that you are viewing the program and not the Prefetch version of the program. Easiest way to tell, prefetches are in the Prefetch folder in the Windows folder on C Drive.

Click down through each category in the window of the Versions tab in properties to find out who has created these programs. If they are associated with what should be running on your operating system? Do you know what you have installed originally on your computer? You should know this. Not keeping track of it can lead to many different problems. Such as not enough memory and/or drive space for what you have installed. Following this above will rule out the chances of an unknown program causing problems.

...Also to note; If you use IE7 [Internet Explorer 7] and are running XP, you have also allowed your system to install this Hook to the Kernel.
...The above procedure will find most all running processes to be identified. To see where an installment came from. A starting point that you would need is what recognizes the Hook to the Kernel. Up till last year there were only 6 Root kits that could detect a hook to the kernel. I have discovered a 7th that was unannounced. ZoneAlarm V6.1.737. This not only identifies the Microsoft Hook. It records each time it was accessed. Cross referencing this install and possible modification date to logged connections, you can detect what Network & IP it came from.
