100% Adsense earnings with Knol vs. 60%/40% split with Hubpages
Content Management System Comparison
Does the intricate social networking platform on Hubpages equate to more profitability than Knol's 100% Google Adsense payouts? Compare the features, pros and cons of each, and explore some of the other CMS options that are currently available.
I recently signed up with Hubpages (just a couple weeks ago). As of today, stats show I've earned a whooping $0.42 with them so far. I'm not at all unhappy with this amount as early on as this is. It can take quite a long time to earn much of anything through hub writing (some never do), and I've been congratulated already for accomplishing this much (or should I say little) so quickly. One of the hubbers posted that it took them about three years before they started to receive any money. Unless you happen to get very lucky and stumble upon a topic that is currently well searched and your article just happens to be so splendid and high ranking enough that it stays hot and interesting, and drums up a ton of page views for you almost immediately, I'm told you'll be waiting awhile. Never-the-less, we all hope that we'll be one of the one in a million people it happens to, and we'll "win the Adsense lottery" so to speak.
HUBPAGES ADVANTAGESOne thing that I like about Hubpages is that they have an established community of writers who interact actively with each other and that they have forums for us to participate in on a wide variety of topics. From what I've seen so far, they have a lot more social action going on than what I'mseeing here on Knol. The setup (or layout) of Hubpages is also more appealing to me. I like that we can sort by best, hot, latest hubs, and by topics to find the articles that interest us most. Being able to see who the latest hubbers are and get statistics on how many comments their hub has generated is highly beneficial and is helping the community thrive. There's a strategic interaction going on between the established authors and newbies which is very motivational and useful to both sides. The new comer who is seeking input and hungry for comments, fan mail, etc., is normally quick to follow anyone who shows an interest in their hub or that interacts with them in any way.
Knol's version counter is annoying! I wish they would get rid of this feature since it changes even for articles that haven't been published yet. Every time the author presses save, it changes to the next version, tic-tic-tic. If you have the habit of pressing save often, by the time you actually publish your article, you may be up to an embarrassing Version: 5000. Hopefully I'm exaggerating this, but you get the gist. Another point up (or should I say "vote up") for Hubpages, due to the fact that it doesn't have the irritating ticker. Who wants to notify their readers of how many attempts it took before you finally got it right?!!
KNOL ADVANTAGESKeeping 100% of our Adsense revenues instead of having to split them is the biggest plus. The writing platform is a little simpler too, and not quite as confusing (in my opinion) as the hubs capsule style set-ups. The summary spot on Knol is right at the top beneath the sub-title fill-in box, so it's hard to miss. With Hubpages it's hidden off to the right of the typing area in the menu options, and you have to click on the word summary in order to bring up the box and type it in. I didn't know this when I wrote my first article, and it wasn't until I looked at the statistics area and saw there was a code warning that I realized there was even supposed to be an article summary.

THE TESTAt this point, I'm not quite sure which of these two CMS platforms (Hubpages or Knol) will be the best fit for me. I kind of suspect it will be Hubpages, just because of their fantastic communitycamaraderie and built in social networking platform, but it's time to do a trial run to see which of the two delivers the best results in form of page views, and ultimately which will generate the most income. I'll keep you posted. In the meantime, if you have feedback to share on this subject, please do. Thanks for taking the time to read my first knol.
