I am sure that you have some idea of what you want to do in your internet business. You may want to offer a service or a specific product. If you are lost as to what topic your business will be about, start thinking of things that you like to do or have a passion about. Choose words that represent your ideas.
For instance:
- I am a writer.
- I enjoy writing "how to" and "self improvement" books.
- I have business experience.
- I want to write for other people as a service.
Keyword Research
Keyword research is vital in an internet business. It will help you to select a profitable target market and to identify keywords that you will use to:- Purchase your domain
- Build your website
- Develop your content
- Name your business
- Name your products or services
- Expand your income streams
- Advertise your business
Choosing a Market Niche
Use your keyword list to select a niche in the market. The chosen niche keyword should be high in demand, relatively low in supply and representative of the theme of your business. Once you have chosen such a keyword, you can use it to name your domain and to name your business. If you already have a name for your business, the website name can be used as a subdivision of your business. When naming your domain and your business, it is important to check the legality of the name. You can do this by checking the trademarks in your country.Developing a Content Plan
Your content plan should initially consist of at least 30 web pages that contain information. This leads us to the question, "Why is website content important?" Website content is very important to both the search engines that will send you traffic, and to visitors that will enter your site. Why is content important to the search engines?
You will hear a lot about search engine optimization on the internet. Without the power of the search engines working for you, your website will basically just be a pretty website on the web. If you want it to be a money-making machine, you will do what you have to do to get a sufficient ranking in the search engines. There are many methods discussed about optimizing a website for the search engines. Some of it is true and some is drastically outdated. The search engines are dedicated to its users. They want to deliver websites through top ranking that provide what the users want. What they want most of all is information.
It seems that only two of the search engine optimization techniques work consistently. They include:
- Keyword-related content
- Link popularity
Why is content important to visitors?
Content is important to visitors because, more likely than not, they are looking for information or comparing prices. If you provide informative content, you will create a good first impression as well as developing a sense of value from the visitors' perspective. They are likely to stick around reading your content, subscribing to your blog or newsletter, marking your website as a favorite, and revisiting your site from time to time. They are more likely to become customers if you develop that sense of trust and credibility through your content. Your content can actually establish you as a professional in your field. The content also affects the browser's conduct. The more time that they spend on your website away from the search engine is an indication to the search engine that your website has some value. How to develop the content plan
As stated before, your original content plan should include at least 30 pages. You will use your keywords that you identified in keyword research in your plan. It is best to choose a mixture of keywords - some high demand keywords and some keywords with some demand, but little supply. You can't count on every page getting indexed in the top ranking of the search engines; however, if you can get some of the pages listed in top ranking, the content itself along with the navigation buttons and internal links will lead visitors to the rest of your pages. Organize your keywords into a three tier plan that makes sense. Your primary keyword will be the focus of your home page which represents the first tier. The second tier will include introduction pages and will serve as your navigation buttons. The third tier will just be informative content that relates to your second tier keywords. Starting out, it is good to have about five second tier pages. Example of a three tier plan:Title The title, which contains your primary keyword for the page, will appear as a title in the search engines. Its mission is to attract attention from browsers.
Description The description will appear under the title in the search engines. It should also include the primary keyword for the best search engine optimization effect. It should tell what the web page is about as well as presenting value that will encourage browsers to click-through to your webpage.
Headline The headline, which also contains the primary keyword, will appear as a title or headline on the webpage itself. It should be interesting enough to get the browser to read the page.
Building the Website
If you choose to use a website designer to build your website, make sure that basic website development is involved. If they are just going to design the site and hand it over to you, you may be better off building the website yourself and hiring a designer later to make it visibly attractive if you are into that. I have gone both ways and I find it much easier to build the website myself using tools that I am familiar with. I have spent a fortune on getting a website built and I was completely lost in regard to updating the website or making changes. Like I said before, now I use SiteSell. Their site building program is phenomenal, easy to understand and to use, and easy-to-follow instructions are provided as part of the package. They even have a forum where you can discuss ideas and get directions and ideas. Compared to other options, the price of the service is minimal. Don't focus on building standard website pages at this time. The main objective is to develop the content and get traffic to the site. After you complete this objective, you can commercialize your site, take care of adding an ecommerce solution and develop other pages like about us, services and products. At this stage of development, you need to focus solely on your content. I suggest that you upload the content to your website in batches as the content is developed. Each webpage needs to be submitted to the search engines after they are uploaded. If you use the SiteSell service, submission will be taken care of for you. If not, you will have to manually submit each page to the various search engines according to their instructions.Developing the Content
The content for your website needs to include enough keywords to let the search engines know what your webpage is about; however, keyword stuffing is a thing of the past. You can actually be penalized for submitting a page that overuses keywords because it is considered to be keyword spamming. If you don't know how to use the keywords, you might want to hire an SEO copywriter to develop your content. Also, if you are using SiteSell, when you analyze the page, you will be notified instantly, before you actually build the page, if you have used the primary keyword too much or not enough.
Building an Opt-In Email List, Contact Page and Setting-up Email
After you have developed your homepage and second tier pages, it is a good idea to develop an option for building an opt-in email list, a contact page and email accounts for the website. Your website will not yet be commercialized, but it is a good idea to be prepared for contacts and ready to take advantage of every visit that you do get in regard to building leads.
Opt-in Email List
Building an opt-in email list is vital to an internet business. A lot of people that come to your site won't take advantage of your offerings right away. If you can get them to signup for a free report, a free eCourse or a free newsletter you can get them to provide their email address and opt-in to receive emails from you which will come in handy for email marketing.
I strongly discourage purchasing email lists for the purpose of email marketing. First of all, there are laws concerning sending unsolicited commercial. Secondly, it is very ineffective. If you don't have an opt-in list, email marketing is a waste of time and money. Your opt-in option should be presented early on your homepage. You should also have a page solely dedicated to the opt-in feature so that you can refer to it in the rest of your content and direct readers to opt-in. If the reader leaves your website, you will at least benefit from the visit by obtaining a lead for future marketing if they choose to opt-in.
Contact Page
A contact page is probably more important to the website owner than it is to visitors. It will make you feel more comfortable about not having your website commercialized in the early stages if your visitors can contact you. I suggest developing a contact page before you start trying to get traffic. On the page, be sure to include a phrase or drop-down list that asks where the visitor heard about you. This information will be valuable to you in evaluating your efforts to get traffic later on.Email Accounts
After you have purchased a domain and hosted your website, you can open email accounts that actually use the name of your website. This is much more professional that using a standard, free email account. When you first start out, I suggest opening a webmaster email account and a service email account. For example: webmaster@yourdomainname.com and service@yourdomainname.com . If you don't want to visit several areas to read your email, you can direct the email to your standard email account through your control panel.Getting Traffic to Come to Your Website
You can start taking steps to get traffic while your content is being developed. I suggest getting started after your homepage, second-tier pages, contact page, and opt-in option are developed. However, getting your site listed in directories should happen after 30 pages of content are developed and before you commercialize your site. Trust me; it will be easier to get directory listings at that stage of development. There are several ways to get traffic to your website. I suggest trying one thing at a time until you get the knack of it, and then you can develop a plan to do each of the following things daily, weekly or monthly, whatever works for you. Your prime objective at this stage is to get incoming links from related websites. It will help you to get your pages listed in the search engines and it may actually result in traffic. However, don't depend on these things to produce a lot of traffic. As a part of your monthly plan, you will also need to add fresh content to your site from time to time. Search engines love websites that grow overtime and added pages will give you the advantage of using more keywords to make the most of your website. Visitors also like new content, especially if they are repeat visitors. Here are some ideas for getting traffic to your website:
Directory Listings
There are many directories on the web. Choose both major directories and industry defined directories. Submit a request for inclusion of your URL. Some directories allow free listings and some charge quite bit just for consideration. Directory listings will make a difference to the search engines as well as attracting some attention from directory users. Avoid link farms and reciprocal link offers. They don't seem to hold much value from the search engines' perspective.Participate in Related Forums or Groups
Usually, forums or groups allow you to post a link to your site in your profile or in your signature. Your participation will result in an incoming link to your website which will help with search engine optimization. You may even build some leads through your participation.Comment on Related Blogs
Many blogs accept comments and in many cases you are allowed to use your URL in the comment feature. It is an excellent way to get your link on the web.Network for Referrals
This is a traditional offline method of building business that actually does work for an internet business. Build relationships with other firms that offer products or services related to your business, but are not competitors. For instance, I write web copy. I have business relationships with web designers, web developers and graphic designers. We often trade services with each other which save us all a lot of money, and we provide referrals to each other when our clients need related services that we don't offer.Article Marketing
Article marketing is actually a great way to get your link spread all over the net. There are several article directories in which you can publish expert articles that contain a link to your website. Users of the site are able to reprint the unchanged article. If your articles provide useful information and are written in a professional manner, other website owners will be more likely to use the article as content on their website or blog. You will get incoming links as well spreading the word about your profession and developing the impression that you are an expert.
Advertise Your Website
You can do this through buying pay-per-click ads or buying advertisements from other sites. Advertising can get expensive (compared to free traffic that comes from a search engine listing); however, it is a way to get traffic to your website. I don't suggest that you pay for traffic until you have commercialized your website. I have heard about several other methods to get traffic to your website, but I have not yet experimented with them, so I withhold my recommendation at this time. They include social bookmarking, adding widgets to your website and posting ads in Craig's List. If you are prone to try new things or if you have experience with these methods, I would love to hear your comments about them.Commercializing Your Website
Once you have sufficient traffic coming to your website, it is time (finally!) to commercialize the website. There are many options that you can use to generate income. I suggest that you use several of them in order to have a diversified business with multiple income streams. Concentrate on perfecting one income stream at a time. Otherwise, you will get overloaded and the effectiveness of your efforts will suffer. Here are some ideas for commercializing your site so that it will make money:Sell a Product
You can just sell one product or a variety of products on the internet. You can even open an online store to sell items as a retailer or wholesaler.
Offer Services
If you offer a service, the internet is an excellent medium for marketing it. You can concentrate on getting your website listed in local or regional directories to get local business, or you can make the world your playground reaching various countries.
Sell Information
eBook publishing is a well-known way of making money on the internet. If you don't write, you can hire a ghostwriter to write the eBooks for you.Sell Your Knowledge
If you are a coach, a trainer or a consultant (or wish to be) you can actually attract a lot of attention through an internet business. If you wish to offer a course online but you need to develop curriculum for the course, there are plenty of ghostwriters that can assist in developing the curriculum. Training sessions can be conducted through a password-protected forum that can be added to your website.Display Advertisements on Your Website
You can do this the hard way by selling advertisements, or you can make money easily by displaying advertisements through the Google AdSense program. This program allows you display content-related advertisements on your website and each time that one of your visitors click on one, you get paid by Google.
Sell Affiliate Products or Services
There are many product developers and service providers that offer affiliate programs that enable you to make money through referring people to their product or service. When a sale occurs as a result of your efforts, you will be paid a commission.Developing Relationships with Your Website Visitors
I know of five excellent ways to develop relationships with website visitors. They include:- Offering a newsletter to be delivered to your opt-in email list
- Offering a free eCourse to be delivered through auto-responders by email
- Opening a blog
- Offering RSS Feeds for delivery of your blog
- Opening a discussion forum
- Continuously providing new content to your website
